I used to be a sound sleeper but recently I find myself waking up about 3am or 4am, often quite hot and sweaty. I go back to sleep after about an hour or so, but don’t sleep deeply. I am not under any new stress at the moment and am otherwise healthy. I am in my early forties

Your problem is a very common one and usually relates to a dip in blood sugar levels, commonly referred to as hypoglycaemia. The cause of this is eating an evening meal too early, eating a high-glycaemic-index meal (one where sugars are released quickly) or skipping meals. Consider a low-glycaemic-index diet with a good quantity of protein in each meal, or having a protein snack before bed.
